Security Labelling Scheme for Smart Devices

Led by the Alliance and funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs, the labelling scheme is a key element of the national 2023–2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy.

Solar-Powered Neighborhood

Helping Australians choose secure internet connected products

Australians are using more internet connected products (smart devices) than ever – from TVs, doorbells and cameras to robot vacuums and solar inverters. While smart devices make life easier, they also carry risks and many consumers don’t know if the products they bring into their homes are secure.

The Australian security label for smart devices will help fix that. Being co-designed with the Australian Government, the label will provide clear, certified information on a device’s security before purchase, helping Australians make informed choices.

This scheme will:

  • Help consumers assess and compare the security of smart devices at point of sale

  • Reward manufacturers who implement secure design

  • Set a benchmark for industry and align with global best practice.

Part of a bigger plan

The labelling scheme is a priority initiative under Horizon 1, Shield 2 of the 2023–2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy, which aligns Australia with global leaders who are moving toward greater transparency and security in consumer tech.

It follows the passing of legislation and rules for a mandatory minimum security standard for smart devices in November 2024 and the rules that came into effect on 4 March 2026 (please see Security Standards for Smart Devicesfor more details and guidance).

“Australians need to be able to trust that the devices they bring into their homes won’t compromise their safety.”

The Hon Tony Burke MP, Minister for Home Affairs

Get involved

We’re now in the co-develop phase and are calling on manufacturers, distributors, consumer advocacy groups, cybersecurity and standards experts, test labs and international partners to get involved early.

If you manufacture or supply consumer-grade smart devices, this is your opportunity to be among the first to adopt the label, demonstrate your commitment to security and showcase your credentials to consumers.

Register for the pilot and get ahead of the pack. The pilot begins in October 2026 and will be a live test of how the label will work in practice – click here to register your interest.

“Raising consumer awareness about smart device security is an important first step in reducing cyber risk. It’s also a great opportunity for manufacturers to take the lead in raising security for all of us.”
